Verbal consult policy
The verbal consult is given within one business day, usually within hours of submission, with a thorough written report for each case available within two business days. The verbal consult is given to the practice where the animal is scanned.
Our specialists will only call the practice where the pet had their ultrasound exam performed, not the referring practice. In no cases will the specialist consult with the pet owner. In order to maintain the integrity of the client-veterinarian relationship when a client travels to your practice for an ultrasound exam, a veterinarian in the scanning practice should be the one to discuss findings and further diagnostic plans for the pet with the client. The verbal consult is designed to integrate ultrasound image findings with case history. Optimally, the scanning veterinarian or technician should be available when the consult is made in case there are questions about a particular image, or if additional images are requested. If the scanning veterinarian is not available for a verbal consult, an associate in the same practice can receive the consult in their place.
If a referring veterinarian would also like an internal medicine or cardiology consult on an individual case or on a general topic, they may request one from us for an additional consult fee. The referring veterinarian consult cannot be replaced for the verbal consult to the scanning practice, and during this consult, comments about the quality and details of the ultrasound exam and images per se will not be made.
The scanning technician working at your practice:
If you have a technician (vet tech or sonographer) working at your practice that performs ultrasound examinations, a veterinarian in your practice should be prepared to speak to the specialist for the verbal consult. Since the scanning technician is not a licensed veterinarian, he or she is not able to establish a client-veterinarian relationship with the client that travels to your practice for an ultrasound exam. The specialist will relay the case interpretation to a veterinarian in the practice, and then he or she can relay this information to the client, as well as the referring veterinarian if there is one. If the referring veterinarian would like an additional consultation with a specialist, we will provide this for an additional consult fee. During the consult with the referring veterinarian, comments about the ultrasound examination per se will not be made. If there are concerns with regards to the quality of the scan, they will be discussed with a veterinarian in the practice where the animal was scanned, or with the scanning technician.
The mobile ultrasound technician:
If a technician (vet tech or sonographer) travels to your practice to perform an ultrasound examination on an animal, the verbal consult will be done with a veterinarian in the practice where the animal is scanned. This veterinarian can then relay the information to the client, as well as the referring veterinarian if there is one. If the referring veterinarian would like an additional consultation, they may request one from us for an additional consult fee. During the consult with the referring veterinarian, comments about the ultrasound examination per se will not be made. If there are concerns with regards to the quality of the scan, they will be discussed with a veterinarian in the practice where the animal was scanned, or with the scanning technician. All mobile ultrasound technicians should provide their cell phone number in the case history sent to the specialist so that the specialist can contact them if they have specific questions about the ultrasound exam.
